#194 Mosser Laying Down Cat (Reclining Cat)

We wanted to thank Rhona Collins for her help in making this section possible. She helped by providing numerous photos of the Reclining cat and shared an in depth color list. Her assistance was immensely appreciated. We also wanted to thank several members of our Facebook group (Mosser Cat Central) who took the time to submit photos. This section will include a color reference guide along with some interesting facts on these laid-back felines.

We first spotted this cat in the 1982 Mosser Glass catalog. Since our archives are missing the 1980 catalog, it’s possible it could have been produced that year. However, because it's not listed in the 1979 catalog, we can narrow its production down to between 1980 and 1982.

The cat is in a lying down or crouching position while looking straight ahead. Its tail curves to the left. It was produced in a very limited amount of colors and finishes. Some were sold hand painted by Mosser Glass. In the catalog, the hand painted cats were marked as “Dec” or “D” for hand decorated. The name was simply listed as "#194 Cat" up until around 2002 when Mosser officially called it "Laying Down Cat #194." It was retired shortly after in 2004.

There are 35 different colors and finishes in our color reference guide with the possibility of more yet to be discovered.

Date made: 1980/1982 to 2004.

Height & Length: 1.75" high by 4.25" long.

Maker's mark: Maker's marks can vary greatly depending on when the cat was manufactured. These cats have a plunger mark located underneath at the center of the base. Some have a small letter "M" (for Mosser) within a circle outline. Others have a Rosette plunger mark or a plain one. They can also have a small "M" located to the right of the base of the tail. Pictured are some examples below.

The colors are listed in alphabetical order. When we reached out to Mosser Glass to see if there was a color list available for the Reclining cat, we were informed that one didn't exist. Rhona Collins was able to purchase a large lot of these cats from a long time collector. When the lot arrived it was accompanied with a detailed color list. Our color reference guide is based on this list. Images with a "?" mean that we are in search of that particular color for the color reference guide. Blue Milk vs Periwinkle

Blue Milk is a turquoise color that is similar to a Robin's egg blue. Periwinkle has a lavender hue to the blue.

Cobalt Blue

Translucent dark blue. This is the darkest shade of blue that Mosser Glass produced. This color is also available in a hand decorated satin finish.

Green & Milk Slag Satin

Translucent emerald green with white and blue milk slag swirled throughout. This has a satin finish. It looks like a mix of "Lemon Lime Swirl" and "Peppermint Slag" in the Mosser Sitting cats. Green Opal

Translucent emerald green with white opalescence on the ears. This type of opalescent glass is produced by re-heating parts of the molten glass when it has just started to cool. Heat sensitive chemicals in the glass turn the re-heated sections white. The easiest way to do this is by putting the newly pressed glass back into the furnace entrance and those parts closest to the heat turn white. Also available in a satin finish.

Green Opal Satin

Translucent emerald green with white opalescence on the ears. This type of opalescent glass is produced by re-heating parts of the molten glass when it has just started to cool. Milk and Cobalt

Opaque white milk glass with swirls of cobalt blue. This color was not on the color list. We are using the same color name as the Mosser Sitting cats. It may have been produced when Mosser Glass was in between colors in their glass tanks. We have only seen one on Worthpoint but others could exist.

Periwinkle

Opaque lavender blue. This color looks almost light purple when compared with the color "Blue Milk". Also available in a hand decorated finish, satin and a satin hand decorated finish.

We are unsure of what the color “Slate” was and hope to come across it one day. You’ll notice that a lot of colors produced were never mentioned in the catalog. Black more than likely was “Black Amethyst”.
